Travel Lessons

Don't go to a warm location during high season

Tempting, but if you live in a cold climate, you could be in for quite a shock when you get home & hit the cold air. Plus, if you want to be warm when you arrive home, you'll have to pack bulky clothes--no fun for those of us who like to stick to carry-on only.

Check long-distance calling policies

On the BVI, we couldn't use our cell phone to call the States (an international call). We had to use a special service (read: expensive)that we could only call from a land line. Make sure you have a calling card.

Double check the ounces on liquid souvenirs

We bought a small jar of guava jam on Tortola. Did you know the TSA considers jam a liquid? Well, they do ... so more than 3 ounces of it must be checked. Peanut butter is also a liquid. Who knew?

Don't rely on credit cards as your primary source of bucks everywhere you go

If you travel somewhere remote, like an island or rural area, businesses may not accept credit cards. Either have plenty of cash or make sure you have your ATM card with you (and find out if the place has ATMs).

Know how child-friendly/oriented the place is

If you have children, this is a no-brainer; you already know Fort Lauderdale during Spring Break is a bad idea. But you should check on this even f you don't have children. If you're looking for peaceful relaxation, you probably want to be sure where you're going can actually give you that. Obviously Disney cruises are out.

Save money ... don't eat at the hotel restaurant

Generally, they're way more expensive, you won't get true local flavors, and the portions are teeny. Either eat where the locals eat or buy ingredients at a grocery store and make meals in your room to stash in your backpack.

When travelling to islands, check the cruise schedules

You could be in for a shock when the little gem of a beach that Frommer's raves about has 50 people and their coolers on it.
